General Health Checks

heart_and_cardiogramWe would like to see all new patients for a health check on joining the Practice. However, all patients are welcome to have a health screening check with a practice nurse, especially if they have not been seen at the Surgery within the last 3 years.

Patients aged 75 and over

We invite all these patients to make an appointment with the practice nurse once a year for a health check. This can be carried out in the surgery or at home if your medical condition necessitates.

Communication Support

If you need any communication support in order to receive the right information about your health, please let the Practice know straight away.  The support could be in the form of an Interpreter, Translator or Sign Language support. The Practice will endeavour to get the communication support  that you need.

Pre-Natal and Maternity Care

It may be helpful to discuss any health problems you have with your Doctor before becoming pregnant. At this stage we recommend that every woman is screened for Rubella (German Measles) and starts taking folic acid (to reduce the incidence of spina bifida). We like to see ante-natal patients as early as possible in pregnancy. All doctors provide maternity medical services, together with the practice midwife.

Family Planning

The doctors are Family Planning trained and give advice on all contraception methods. Some of our doctors hold the Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare. We provide emergency contraception if required (the “morning after pill”). Patients may also discuss contraception methods with a Practice Nurse.

Cervical Smears and Well Woman Checks

We strongly advise the regular screening of women between the ages of 25-65 for cervical cancer. A cervical smear test is usually carried out in one of our well women clinics by a practice nurse. A general health and urine check is normally done at the same time. Patients may wish to discuss the menopause and hormone replacement therapy with a practice nurse or doctor.

Child Health Checks

Child Health Checks are carried out at the following intervals:-

  • 8 week check – by a GP, usually done in conjunction with the first set of immunisations, and the mother’s post natal check.
  • 8 month check – Health Visitor
  • 18 month – Health Visitor

Childhood Immunisations

It is important that your child is fully protected by being immunised. If you have any worries about the safety or otherwise of the procedure then please arrange to discuss the problem with either the Health Visitor, Practice Nurse or Doctor.
